Soda With A Side Of Mango?

Soda With A Side Of Mango?

Soda is a beautiful and very energetic puppy who found himself in a sticky situation. Just like many of us in Broome, we cannot wait for the mango season to arrive. Apparently Soda thinks so to!

Alex & Shannon knew something wasn’t quite right when Soda presented with acute retching and vomiting in the very early hours of the morning, and continued to fall ill for days following treatment. After an examination was made that revealed a hard foreign body in his intestines, we obtained a radiograph for confirmation. The radiograph revealed a foreign body however, we still had no idea what it may be!
Little Soda was then prepared for an exploratory laparotomy surgery. This means we were going inside to explore where and what this foreign body may be.
We investigated the length of the bowel from the duodenum to the colon. We found a mango seed inside the jejunum! The bowel over the mango seed was very tight, and luckily for Soda there was no perforation. We exteriorized a segment of the jejunum containing the mango seed and removed it. The bowel was sutured back together and placed back into his abdominal cavity.

He was stitched back together and recovered in a nice warm bed where he was told by the nurses to think twice before eating mango seeds again! We have since heard he has made a fantastic recovery and is back to swimming in rock pools and chewing everything in his reach. It is a big surgery for a young puppy and we are very proud of the progress he is making.
